In a soap opera bordering on boring The Other Boleyn Girl also somehow manages to keep the sexiness out of one of the juiciest scandals in history. Even though the picture is dark and drab the costumes and sets are impressive. But it’s just hard to maintain an interest in the story. What about the history here? It’s wholly a work of fiction — based on the 2002 novel by Philippa Gregory. The popular book drew fire in some quarters for playing fast and loose with the facts in its tale of two sisters, Anne and Mary, who see their relationship tested by a mutual desire to set up shop in the royal bedroom. Charlie Bartlett
February 23rd, 2008 — movies
Even though it doesn’t seem to know if it’s a teen comedy or a teen drama and it’s based on the tired old parents/teachers vs kids/students premise Charlie Bartlett does have a few twists and turns that are unique. I have been keeping on eye on Anton Yelchin since his days as the kid on HBO’s “Huff”. Now he has a chance early in his young career to carry a film. [ RT ]
Be Kind Rewind
February 22nd, 2008 — movies
Be Kind Rewind is a surprisingly charming and general audience friendly Jack Black comedy. Nary a hit of sexual activity or violence and I think “hell” was the harshest word. Sure the story was silly and ridiculous but if it does good business the film could be a pleasant harbinger. [ RT ]
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
February 9th, 2008 — movies
No laughs here. This is the “Romanian abortion” movie and it drags you in whether you want to get involved or not. Despite being unfamiliar with living under state control in an unfamiliar country full of people speaking an unfamiliar language you will have no trouble, if not identifying with, knowing these people. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is hard to watch at times . . . but i will wager that you will watch one of the best movies of recent years. In Bruges
February 9th, 2008 — movies
Although not at the same level story wise, In Bruges does resemble Pulp Fiction as a dark, somewhat violent and profane comedy. Once again, as in Cassandra Dream, Colin Ferrell is the bumbling comic foil. This is a totally entertaining picture that had the Egyptian Theater audience roaring. [ RT ]
