Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Thank goodness Stephen Spielberg has not grown up completely. He and pal George Lucas, like nobody else, can put together a thrill ride for the big screen that kids of all ages can enjoy. With no crudity, no swear words, no R rated sex Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will suck you in. No matter that the tale, which draws from myths of ancient civilizations, Roswell, dirty rotten commies with a little dose of “Close Encounters” and mushroom clouds, borders on silly. As in most blockbusters these days credibility and credulity is stretched beyond the limits of reality. But what the heck . . . forget about all that for a couple hours and enjoy the ride. [ RT ]

Iron Man

It goes without saying you have to suspend all notions of credibility to enjoy Iron Man. Yes it’s a fun ride and the performances of Downey/Paltrow/Bridges are good as it gets with this kind of thing, but I’d like someone to explain to me why, according to 90% of critics, it’s so damn great. The aforementioned actors add an adult level of appeal not found in most super hero pictures . . . but largely it’s a forgettable film. [ RT ]
